    • Ricki started at the City as a SummerWorks intern, working on the successful Vance Park futsal project, while attending college, for the Office of Governance and Management. Today, Ricki is a full-time crime prevention specialist with the City.

    • SummerWorks intern Michelle Jamarillo helped the Water Resources Division in 2016 on the “Dump No Waste – Drains to Stream” campaign to mark stormdrains.

  • SummerWorks Internships

    Applications are typically accepted in the spring by the SummerWorks organization for the City's summer internship placements, which run June through August. We'll post the link when applications are open.

    • The SummerWorks program places youth, ages 16-24, in paid summer internships at the City and throughout the metro area.
    • It is a 180-hour experience with job coaching.
    • Placement with the City is not guaranteed.

    Fire Cadets

    Motivated young men and women develop leadership, teamwork and responsibility skills while exploring the firefighting profession.

    Once qualified, Cadets can respond to emergency calls in support roles and perform non-emergency tasks according to their training.

    Engineering Internships

    The City provides internships for students studying civil and environmental engineering.

    We partner with Portland State University’s Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program (MECOP).

    MECOP provides two, six-month paid internships for Oregon State University (OSU); Portland State University (PSU); Oregon Tech (OT); and University of Portland (UP) students in various engineering programs.

    • Students apply their sophomore year near the end of March, with interviews in May. This process is known as Selection.
    • Students selected for the program find out over the summer.
    • Placement occurs the end of January of their junior and senior year.

    AmeriCorps Positions

    The City hosts 11-month AmeriCorps positions in partnership with Confluence AmeriCorps.

    • AmeriCorps offers members the chance to serve the community while gaining valuable skills and experience in the environmental justice field.
    • Current AmeriCorps posts at the City with Recycling and Solid Waste include multifamily recycling and solid waste outreach projects to tenants and building managers.
    • Past projects completed with AmeriCorps include wildlife surveys, downspout disconnection, riverbank and wetland stewardship projects.
    • Interviews occur in late July and selected AmeriCorps members start service in mid-September.
    • Members are compensated $13,500 per year plus additional bonuses and benefits.
