Meet Keri: Environmental Program Coordinator
Why did you choose this career?
I wanted to do something to contribute to future generations
help protect natural resources.
What do you enjoy about working at the City of Gresham?
Management is supportive of workers’ needs, goals and interests. I’ve been allowed many opportunities to attend trainings to further my professional growth. I love my co-workers. The City hires good people.
What do you do, in a nutshell?
My specialty skill is toxic reduction education for the public. I design and deliver programs that teach people how to take care of their homes, yards and businesses using less toxic products that are safer for pets, children and the environment.
What's your best advice to someone entering the field?
The environmental field in the Pacific Northwest is highly competitive. Do lots of volunteering and internships to really understand what your interests are and the opportunities in each area. People who become super specialized in their degrees may have a harder time finding work, so I recommend taking a broad breadth of coursework in school to build a foundation that makes you very employable across fields.
What are qualities that help you excel at your job?
Good communication with team members, good organization, and being flexible while trying to bring as much fun into projects and meetings as I can.
What was your career path?
I went to school to study art. Eventually, I went back to school to major in environmental science. I have a master’s degree from the University of Washington in public policy, which highly prepared me for working as a public employee.
What are the most valuable skills you learned in school that you use on the job?
Computer skills such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher. Also, budgeting and project management is important for my job.
What was your first job?
An ice cream sales clerk.
