Skills for the job

Desire to work in both an office environment and at construction sites, residential and commercial properties.
Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints, maps, engineering drawings and specifications.
Math skills, the ability to do mathematical calculations.
Desire to learn and apply the right codes and regulations – and explain them to the public.
Ability to work with property owners, contractors and the public.
Ability to respond to angry citizens and use diplomacy with many types of people.
Ability to research on a computer, enter data and write reports.

Education

Options are available from the high school and GED-diploma level through college degrees, including an associate or bachelor's degree. On-the-job continuing education is encouraged to stay current in the field and receive certifications needed for higher-level positions.
