Skills for the job

  • Desire to work mostly hands-on in buildings and grounds surrounding facilities.
  • Enjoy using equipment and tools in construction and repair.
  • Knowledge of basic building and grounds maintenance practices.
  • Operation of power tools.
  • Perform heavy, manual works under confined and uncomfortable conditions. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Operate a computer and learn basic City computer applications.
  • Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
  • Handle high levels of stress due to heavy workload and frequent task prioritization changes Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines for mechanic work.
  • Provide customer service to customers and staff.
  • May be required to lift heavy equipment and materials more than 50 pounds. May be required to work at heights more than 20 feet. 

Education

A high school diploma or GED-certificate. Trade or technical school, or additional experience in skilled trade areas (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, vehicle mechanic) may be required for certain positions.
