Skills for the job
- Desire to work mostly hands-on in buildings and grounds surrounding facilities.
- Enjoy using equipment and tools in construction and repair.
- Knowledge of basic building and grounds maintenance practices.
- Operation of power tools.
- Perform heavy, manual works under confined and uncomfortable conditions. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Operate a computer and learn basic City computer applications.
- Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
- Handle high levels of stress due to heavy workload and frequent task prioritization changes Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines for mechanic work.
- Provide customer service to customers and staff.
- May be required to lift heavy equipment and materials more than 50 pounds. May be required to work at heights more than 20 feet.
Education
A high school diploma or GED-certificate. Trade or technical school, or additional experience in skilled trade areas (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, vehicle mechanic) may be required for certain positions.
