Skills for the job
- Desire to work in both an office environment and at construction sites, residential and commercial properties.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints, maps, engineering drawings and specifications.
- Math skills, the ability to do mathematical calculations.
- Desire to learn and apply the right codes and regulations – and explain them to the public.
- Ability to work with property owners, contractors and the public.
- Ability to respond to angry citizens and use diplomacy with many types of people.
- Ability to research on a computer, enter data and write reports.
Education
Options are available from the high school and GED-diploma level through college degrees, including an associate or bachelor's degree. On-the-job continuing education is encouraged to stay current in the field and receive certifications needed for higher-level positions.
