Fix a Water Leak

Three steps: check, twist, replace

1.

Check

  • Look for dripping faucets, showerheads, sprinklers, and other fixtures.
  • Look for silent toilet leaks by dropping food coloring into the tank to see if it appears in the bowl before you flush. Call 503-618-2525 or email Eric.Jones@GreshamOregon.gov for free leak detector dye tablets.
  • Read your meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.
  • Check irrigation systems and spigots.
2.

Twist

Twist and tighten the hose and pipe connections.

3

Replace, if necessary

WaterSense faucet aerators use 20% less water and perform as well as or better than standard models.

Make repairs and apply for utility bill leak adjustment

  • The property owner is responsible for water pipes from the meter to the house.

Leak adjustment policy

  1. Repairs need to be made within 30 days after the leak is discovered or from notification from the City of a possible leak, whichever is first.
  2. Requests for adjustments must be made within four months of the repair date.
  3. The leak amount is determined by comparing consumption during the leak period to the same time of year with no leak present.
  4. Qualifying adjustments are for up to 50% of the determined leak amount from number 3 above.
  5. Adjustments are applied to water consumption charges.
  6. Unexplained or unintentional water loss does not qualify under this policy. This could include valves unintentionally left open, water theft, or other water loss that isn’t remedied by a repair. This isn't an inclusive list, and we are happy to work with you to determine if your water leak qualifies for an adjustment under this policy.
  7. Payment extensions may be available to give additional time. If you need additional time while the adjustment request is being reviewed, please call 503-618-2373. Unless an extension is granted, the balance must be paid in full by the due date to avoid fees and possible service interruption.
Note: A delay in repair could result in leak adjustment denial. The submission of this form is not a guarantee that any adjustment will be made to your account.

Private water line insurance

Considering water line protection services?

  • Customers are responsible for water line breaks and repairs on their side of the meter.
  • Mailings offering insurance for private water line repairs are not affiliated with the City, nor does the City endorse this type of service.

Contact your homeowner's insurance provider to find out if water lines are covered under your policy.
