Rock the Block
Block party and back-to-school resource fair
Friday, Aug. 23 - Saturday, Aug. 24
Downtown Rockwood
This year we are expanding Rock the Block to two days! Join us in Downtown Rockwood for activities and entertainment the whole family will enjoy. The block party will take place on the evening of Friday, Aug. 23 and the resource fair is Saturday, Aug. 24.
Friday, Aug. 23
5:00–8:30 pm
Join us at the Rockwood Market Hall for an evening of live music featuring Object Heavy and Dreckig. Stop by one of our partner booths and grab a drink or meal at one of the many Downtown Rockwood businesses.
Headliner
Object Heavy is a soul band from Arcata, Calif. Led by Richard Love and composed of seasoned veterans of the West Coast Soul and Funk scene, their sound is a magnetic blend of classic Cadillac soul, effortlessly contagious dance grooves, vocal harmonies and blazing musicianship. Their live show is a must-see experience.
Opening act
Papi Fimbres and Shana Lindbeck grew up in Mexico and Germany but met in Portland. Wanting to honor their heritages in a new and collaborative way, they set out to form Dreckig, which means "dirty" in German. Both deeply influenced by Cumbia’s melodious rhythms and German electronic compositions, they have created their own unique sound within that realm. Using all vintage drum machines and synthesizers, these elements are combined and envisioned in the studio, then brought to the stage in a mystical, dance club frenzy.
Saturday, August 24
11:00 am-4:00 pm
Sticking to the roots of the Rock The Block event, Saturday’s resource fair will offer free food, back-to-school resources such as a backpack and school supply giveaways and free haircuts, and a large contingent of local businesses and community organizations.
There will also be kids activities such as facepainting, a giant bubble show, a splash pad and more.
Both the block party and resource fair will be held in Downtown Rockwood at 18535 SE Stark St. Get directions.
A feature of this area is Rockwood Market Hall, a vibrant gathering space with restaurants, grocers, retailers and offices that surround a central community plaza.
