All U.S. citizens are required to present a passport book, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document when entering the United States. Visit the U.S. Department of State website for specific requirements, forms and other travel information.
Basic requirements
- A completed application form. Do not sign it ahead of time.
- Proof of citizenship: a certified copy of a birth certificate, previously issued U.S. Passport, Certificate of Naturalization, Certificate of Citizenship, etc.
- Valid current government-issued ID.
- Two identical passport photos: 2" x 2", taken recently, against a light background, front head and shoulder view, current depiction, no uniforms, headgear or dark glasses.
These are only basic requirements. You may be required to provide additional documents.
Children under 18
- Must appear in person.
- Under 16 must have consent of both parents.
- Children 16 to 17 years of age must appear with at least one parent or guardian and present photo ID.
