Corbett Fire and Gresham Fire and Emergency Services collaborate for water safety

June 15, 2022

Gresham Fire and Emergency Services are excited to collaborate with Corbett Fire to increase awareness around water safety. The public and media are invited to join in an informative water safety event, on June 16 at 10:00 am, at Dabney State Park, 30174 East Historic Columbia River Highway, Corbett.

Unfortunately, drownings occur every summer along the Sandy River,” says Captain Travis Soles. “This is why collaborating with our neighbors in Corbett is so important. Together, we can work towards providing education and resources to help keep our communities safe.”

Primarily driven by the efforts of Corbett Fire, this event will include a platform along the Sandy River offering life jackets for swimmers to borrow. This platform has bilingual instructions and has been sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods, Home Depot, Oregon State Parks, and Corbett Fire.

Gresham Fire and Emergency Services will be bringing the Department’s new jet ski watercraft for demonstration at the event as well. This watercraft is available for use for the first time this year and greatly reduces response times, particularly in shallow waters. Corbett Fire will also be demonstrating their new underwater sonar scanner (AquaEye), that can identify human bodies underwater. This scanner is the first to be used in the State of Oregon.

Both Corbett Fire and Gresham Fire and Emergency Services have been hard at work training together with the new equipment. By combining the resources and expertise of both fire departments, we aim to make this a fun and safe summer for all.
