Gresham Industrial Area Gets Improved Access at N.E. 181st and Wilkes

Urban Renewal Project Addresses Problem Intersection

Construction started Wednesday, Oct. 3, on street improvements to increase access to and from the Northeast Wilkes Road industrial area in Rockwood via Northeast 181st Avenue and Interstate 84.

During construction, N.E. Wilkes Road is closed to traffic and a detour with signage is in place. Traffic traveling north on 181st Avenue to access the I-84 east-bound on ramp may experience brief delays in the construction zone. The closure of N.E. Wilkes is expected to last into November.

A Gresham Redevelopment Commission (GRDC) urban renewal project, the work will construct direct access to one of the area's key industrial quarters. The improvements will provide direct access from I-84 and eliminate 1.5 miles of travel on city streets to access industrial properties.

Once completed, the improvements will accommodate southbound left and northbound right turns from 181st Avenue onto Wilkes Road, as well as westbound right turns from Wilkes Road onto 181st Avenue.

The $674, 570 project supports new and continued private investment, additional job creation and retention in the surrounding industrial area.

The GRDC in May approved a public-private partnership to fund and construct the Wilkes Road Improvement Project with the City's Department of Environmental Services Transportation Division and property owner Washington Real Estate Holdings Gresham, LLC.
