- Do I have to stay with the fire at all times?
Yes, all fires must be tended by a competent person at all times. You must have a charged hose line, fire extinguisher or other available means of controlling fire spread and a recommended cell phone in case of emergency at all times burning is occurring. All fires must be completely extinguished as directed by the burn information line.

- How can I file a complaint about backyard burning?
For illegal or unsafe burning complaints call the non-emergency line at 503-823-3333. For smoke and nuisance burning related complaints call the Life Safety Division at 503-618-2355.

- What is an alternative to burning?
You can compost your debris and recycle it into a useful garden supplement. For more information call Metro’s Recycling Switchboard at 503-234-3000. There are also Oregon Tax credits available to those who purchase chippers to use as an alternative to burning.

- What size of pile of yard debris can I burn?
The pile shall be no larger than 10 feet in diameter by 6 feet high. If you plan to burn more that one pile, you will need an open burning permit. For open burning fire breaks should be created around piles to prevent fire from spreading.
All piles shall be more than 25 feet from a structure, combustible fence or other combustible materials.
