Gresham Police Cadet Unit
The Cadet Unit is assigned to the operations division of the police department. Cadets take an active role by participating in police ride-alongs, traffic patrols, records management, and crime prevention. Cadets also conduct tours of the police department and provide security for community events with department personnel at the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, Teddy Bear Parade, Police Activities League Sports Camp, and the Oregon Law Enforcement Challenge as well as many other one-time and reoccurring events.
Police Cadets are very interested in working with their community. If there is an event that the cadets might be able to help with please contact us at Cadets@GreshamOregon.gov or call 503-618-2318.
Cadet Recruitment Process
The application and recruitment process for the Gresham Police Cadet Unit is currently open and continuous. To be considered for a position as a cadet, an applicant must complete and submit a police cadet application. Download an application or you may obtain one at the Gresham Police Department Records Division. The selection process involves an oral interview, police background check, and an executive interview with a member of the cadet unit's police advisor staff.
The number of cadets selected each year varies depending on the availability of existing positions.
To apply, you must:
- Be 15 to 20 years old
- Live in Gresham or its surrounding areas
- Be a U.S. Citizen
- Have a GPA of 2.5 or greater (if still attending high school)
- Have a clean criminal history
- Have no moving traffic violations within the last year or no more than a total of two traffic violations of any kind on your driving record
We encourage all interested young men and women to apply. If you have any questions, please contact us at Cadets@GreshamOregon.gov.
Going on a ride-along is one of the best ways for cadets to learn about law enforcement. As the cadets observe and assist their host officers, they learn how to operate the radios, write reports, and do all the other things that police officers do. Once the cadets have the necessary knowledge, they can use the radios, in-car computers and fill out forms and reports during their rides.
Cadets provide crowd and traffic control for community events. They also conduct crowd and traffic control at major crime scenes, traffic accidents and disaster sites. Cadets have previously helped the S.W.A.T. team by assisting with crowd control during a callout.
The Records Division of the Gresham Police Department is where all of the reports and citations are recorded and filed. Our cadets help out by sorting files and updating labels.
The cadets routinely work with young people at events such as the Police Activities League Sports Camp, and at crime prevention events such as National Night Out.
Members of the unit give tours of the department to various groups, including Cub Scouts, Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts, and classes from area schools. Tours can be scheduled by contacting the unit at Cadets@GreshamOregon.gov or 503-618-2318.
The Gresham Police Cadets provide security for community events, both inside and outside the city. In the past, they have helped with security at the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, the Gresham Farmers' Market, the Tigard Festival of Balloons, and the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest.
