Fall in the Garden
In western Oregon there are many cool-weather crops that thrive as long as they are protected from cold rains and frost with a cold frame or row cover. Some crops that can be planted this time of year include: Fava beans, garlic (cloves), onion (sets), shallots (bulbs), overwintering cabbage, lettuce, salad greens, bok choi. Fall is the perfect time of year to plant many natives. While the soil is still warm and the plants are in a dormant state, their energy goes towards roots rather than leaves, giving them a head start for next spring. Just ensure they are frost tolerant and hardy.
